Investment Counsel
Our firm provides portfolio management and investment advice. Typically our clients live and work in Western Massachusetts; we also serve clients in eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida and other states to which clients migrate.
Our Approach
- Active, value-oriented management of separate investment portfolios for individuals, their trusts and retirement plans to preserve and grow our clients’ capital and purchasing power – We pursue an “active” (as differentiated from “passive” or “index”) approach to portfolio management. Our philosophy is conservative and “deep value”. Portfolios are generally comprised of a selection of “no load” value funds and individual equity and income-paying securities selected to meet individual client goals. - Strategic investment planning for significant transitions – We help clients adapt their investment approach in response to significant business, professional and life transitions such as the shift from ownership of “business assets” to “financial assets,” retirement, significant intergenerational transfer of wealth, the loss of a spouse, or divorce. This approach is based on the backgrounds of our founders and their vision of providing exceptional value to all clients, with attention to each client’s unique business and family circumstances, concerns, and aspirations:
- Years of experience in both the investment and corporate worlds underlie a bent for in-depth analysis and assessing risks, and the confidence to consider contrarian ideas;
- Personal, direct, thorough communication with clients about their individual situations;
- Local investment decision-making without difficult-to-reach remote advisers or portfolio managers;
- Investment management integrated with sophisticated retirement, estate and financial planning;
- Technical expertise concerning 401(k) and IRA “rollovers” as well as advice on how to maximize retirement income;
- Attention to the management of total portfolio risk.
We adhere to the highest standards of practice:
- We maintain a fiduciary, rather than an arm’s length, relationship with clients. In other words, we put our clients’ best interests first.
- Client securities are held by Charles Schwab & Co., Inc., which acts as custodian and issues monthly statements and year-end tax statements.
- Martinelli Discenza furnishes a quarterly Portfolio Statement and Performance Summary with analysis and explanation concerning each client’s account.
- Our fees are based on assets under management. We never receive a commission or other compensation based upon the purchase or sale of “financial products.”
Our Team
Investment advisory and portfolio management services are only as good as the people with whom you work directly, those who are providing planning and investment analysis, and those responsible for your overall experience. At our firm, these responsibilities reside with the founders, Gary Martinelli and John Discenza with the help of a dedicated support team.
